Pacific research aims to boost pearl farms’ fortunes

Research is paving the way for more profitable and environmentally friendly black pearl farming on the atolls of the South Pacific islands where production has taken a dive.

A recent special issue of Marine Pollution Bulletin took stock of the current knowledge and future research needs for improving the sustainability of French Polynesia’s black pearl trade.

Popularly known as ‘Black Gold’ or ‘Tahitian Treasure’, black pearls are French Polynesia’s second largest economic resource after tourism.

Tradition Gets Twisted

This year’s hottest wedding dresses take their inspiration from popular culture and traditional femininity. The two most coveted and copied wedding dresses in recent memory have been Kate Middleton’s stunning lace gown and Bella Swan’s haute couture satin sheath. Bella Swan, the Twilight character played by Kristen Stewart, is not real, but she is a role model to an entire generation of young women who dream of falling in love and having their own romantic weddings someday. Her long-sleeved dress looked plain from the front, but the back featured a delicate lace panel and a stream of tiny pearl buttons that extended all the way to the hemline. The same pearls appeared on the cuffs of her sleeves. She did not wear a veil over her face. Instead, she attached a narrow length of tulle to the top of her intricate up-do with a barrette that looked like a miniature crown. Her whole wedding look was rather modern and unconventional for a character who has sometimes criticized for having old-fashioned ideals.

Kate Middleton’s gown is sure to go down in history as one of the most beautiful celebrity wedding dresses of all time. Smartly reminiscent of Grace Kelly’s iconic gown, Kate’s dress evoked modern trends while being demure enough for a royal ceremony that received global attention. The gown had a strapless bodice with a sweetheart neckline that was covered with a long-sleeved translucent lace top. The same floral lace was used as an overlay on the skirt, which was cut in an A-line silhouette. Kate looked chic but not overdone. Her dress was perfect for a young woman who was not born into royalty but who was clearly meant for the public stage. Long-term fans of Kate’s style were not disappointed by her choice of wedding dress.

Kate and Bella also had unusual engagement rings. Diamond solitaires are so commonplace that families are now passing them down through generations without a second thought. Kate and Bella’s rings have injected some much-needed energy into an industry that is not often associated with cutting-edge fashion. Kate inherited Diana’s massive sapphire ring. The blue stone is surrounded by a halo of small diamonds. While it is unlikely that 18-carat rings will ever become a popular trend, it is becoming more common for men to propose with one-of-a-kind vintage rings or rings set with their fiancées’ birthstones.

Bella’s engagement ring was huge as well, but it was comprised of many small diamonds arranged in a large oval. The light reflected off of countless tiny facets in different directions at once, giving the ring a gossamer, web-like effect. The setting wrapped around the whole top half of Bella’s finger and was so big that she couldn’t wear her engagement ring and wedding band on the same finger at the same time. She would eventually wear her wedding band on her left hand and her engagement ring on her right hand.

These two would-be princesses of popular culture, society and fashion have shown today’s young women how to be modern brides who exude grown-up beauty despite being inspired by youthful trends.

Tahitian black pearl’s anti-ageing properties

A. S. Watson Group senior global buying manager Susanna Yuen said Tahitian black pearl powder is hailed for its scientifically proven anti-elastase and anti-tyrosinase properties that protect skin’s elasticity and inhibit melanin production.

“Tahitian black pearl powder is enriched with calcium and amino acids that preserve sheen and shine. Apart from moisturising the skin, the powder also acts as a whitener as it contains anti-tyrosinase and anti-pigmentation properties,” said Hong Kong-based Yuen during an interview in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Jewelry designer Nathalie Leseine draws on rich experiences from around the globe for inspiration.

Following a move to California in her late teens, Leseine relocated briefly to French Polynesia in 2003; meeting pearl farmers and studying the cultured pearl industry. In 2004, she founded Tahitian Designs, selling distinctive carved black Tahitian pearls.

Leseine commissioned a Tahitian master-artisan who had been carving oysters for 30 years to carve traditional Polynesian motifs onto Tahitian pearls. “I wanted to take pearls that were not round and yet show how beautiful they could become with designs representing the soul of the culture; like strength, wisdom, peace, and protection.” Since then, thousands of the dramatic pearls have turned up in original creations by jewelry designers around the world captivated by their allure.
